چکیده

The crossing number is the smallest number of pairwise edge-crossings when drawing a graph into the plane. There are only very few graph classes for which the exact crossing number is known or for which there at least exist constant approximation ratios. Furthermore, up to now, general crossing number computations have never been successfully tackled using bounded width of graph decompositions, like treewidth or pathwidth. In this paper, we for the first time show that crossing number is tractable (even in linear time) for maximal graphs of bounded pathwidth 3. The technique also shows that the crossing number and the rectilinear (a.k.a. straight-line) crossing number are identical for this graph class, and that we require only an O(n)×O(n)-grid to achieve such a drawing. Our techniques can further be extended to devise a 2-approximation for general graphs with pathwidth 3, and a 4w3-approximation for maximal graphs of pathwidth w. This is a constant approximation for bounded pathwidth graphs. 1998 ACM Subject Classification F.2.2 Nonnumerical Algorithms and Problems

Structure and generation of crossing-critical graphs

We study c-crossing-critical graphs, which are the minimal graphs that require at least c edgecrossings when drawn in the plane. For c = 1 there are only two such graphs without degree-2 vertices, K5 and K3,3, but for any fixed c > 1 there exist infinitely many c-crossing-critical graphs. It has been previously shown that c-crossing-critical graphs have bounded path-width and contain only a bou...

Crossing-critical graphs with large maximum degree

A conjecture of Richter and Salazar about graphs that are critical for a fixed crossing number k is that they have bounded bandwidth. A weaker well-known conjecture is that their maximum degree is bounded in terms of k. In this note we disprove these conjectures for every k ≥ 171, by providing examples of k-crossing-critical graphs with arbitrarily large maximum degree. A graph is k-crossing-cr...

The Effect of Planarization on Width

We study the effects of planarization (the construction of a planar diagram D from a non-planar graph G by replacing each crossing by a new vertex) on graph width parameters. We show that for treewidth, pathwidth, branchwidth, clique-width, and tree-depth there exists a family of n-vertex graphs with bounded parameter value, all of whose planarizations have parameter value Ω(n). However, for ba...

A linear time algorithm for testing maximal 1-planarity of graphs with a rotation system

A graph is 1-planar if it can be drawn in the plane such that each edge is crossed at most once. 1-planarity is known NP-hard, even for graphs of bounded bandwidth, pathwidth, or treewidth, and for near-planar graphs in which an edge is added to a planar graph. On the other hand, there is a linear time 1-planarity testing algorithm for maximal 1-planar graphs with a given rotation system. In th...

Crossing-number critical graphs have bounded path-width

The crossing number of a graph G, denoted by cr(G), is defined as the smallest possible number of edge-crossings in a drawing of G in the plane. A graph G is crossing-critical if cr(G − e) < cr(G) for all edges e of G. We prove that crossing-critical graphs have “bounded path-width” (by a function of the crossing number), which roughly means that such graphs are made up of small pieces joined i...
